The A7Rs are Sony’s premium 24x36mm sensor hybrids. If the A9 is the law when it comes to speed, high resolution and the absence of an antialiasing filter are the prerogative of the A7R which guarantee the sharpness, the authenticity of the colors and the respect of the tonal range which are often sacrificed in action shots. After some time spent using the A7R III, we can confirm that Sony’s latest addition has improved significantly over its predecessor, with much faster and more precise autofocus, much better battery life and a new camera mechanism. shutter that offers a burst speed of 10 frames / second, in particular.

Ergonomics, design and functions

The grip

The Alpha series has undergone changes since the launch of the first Alpha 7, but the Japanese manufacturer has retained a recognizable backbone. In particular, the Alpha 7R III is almost identical in weight and dimensions to the A7R II, but borrows a few new features from the Alpha 9, the brand’s professional hybrid. This is the case with the SD port access system, or the mode dial which incorporates a security button on the top.

It’s true that Sony’s main argument about SLRs is the compactness of the system and its lightness. The A7R III measures 126.9 x 95.6 x 73.7 mm while the D850 measures 146 x 124 x 78.5 mm. But it is especially when it comes to weight that Sony’s system performs well, with 657 grams for the body, against 1005 grams for that of Nikon. The optics tested, a 24-70mm f2.8 in both cases, are also 180 grams (15%) lighter and a bit shorter at Sony. However, the Nippon’s G Master optic seems disproportionate to the size of the A7R III, which is likely to hamper the grip a bit. Sony has however made the choice to integrate all the keys on the right side of its device, which frees up the left hand to support the lens. Fair compensation.

The overall grip of the product is more limited than with most SLRs, and it is possible to fit only three fingers on the handle which is about two inches high. This handle is however ergonomic and sufficiently hollowed out to offer a secure grip. The lens release button might have been slid to the other side, but its placement near the handle allows you to switch optics while securing your camera. In fact, the space between the grip and the lens is about 1.5 cm. This lack of space can be annoying in some cases, but it can also be an advantage in one-handed use since the fingers are securely locked between the grip and the lens. Finally, the notched knobs (aperture and speed) do not protrude far enough from the housing for optimal use. Remember that the A7R III now offers a joystick that allows you to select the desired focus point. The video recording button is also cleverly placed to the right of the viewfinder, accessible from the user’s thumb.

The A7R III has a 3.6 million pixel OLED electronic viewfinder, covering 100% of the field. Sony has greatly improved its viewfinder since the first Alpha 7, but it is still less bright and pleasant to use than a reflex viewfinder. However, this aim has the advantage of presenting a dynamic display, allowing the image to be viewed as it will be captured. The dynamic eye-view display is also useful in video as it offers more stability than with just the LiveView. The fact that the viewfinder pops out also leaves more room for the nose, which is less stuck to the screen.

The body’s 7.5cm TFT LCD screen offers 1.44 million dots and the ability to select the AF point by touch. Unfortunately, tactile navigation is not available in the menus, which would have saved time in the many tabs that Sony offers. It would also have been nice if this hinged screen had a superior downward tilt, since here you have to settle for 41 degrees. Say you are carrying your camera at arm’s length when photographing or filming a concert: the screen may be subject to glare and interfere with the shot. Upwards, the incline is sufficient, with about 107 degrees.

During the presentation of the case, Sony particularly insisted on the improvement of the autonomy compared to the previous model. This now allows around 530 shots compared to 290 for the A7R II.

The connection

Aiming to be professional, the A7R III offers rich connectivity. It consists of a micro HDMI connector (type D), a USB-C port, a micro USB socket, and a headphone socket (3.5 mm stereo mini jack). A microphone socket is also included, as is a flash synchro socket. The A7R III is also compatible with Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n (2.4 GHz band), Bluetooth (v4.1) and NFC. The latter makes it possible in particular to quickly couple the camera to an Android or iOS smartphone, and to remotely control the shooting using the Play Memories application. It is also possible to transfer images to the associated phone.

Since Sony’s hybrid system aims for compactness, the manufacturer only integrates ports for SD cards. The novelty compared to the A7R II is that there are two here, one of which is UHS-II compatible. Note that slot number 1, the one at the bottom, has priority.

Resolution

As a preamble to this part, remember that the resolution corresponds to the smallest element that can be distinguished in absolute terms by the shooting system. This is therefore a quality intrinsic to the system being measured, which depends in particular on the optics, the sensor and the sampling frequency. This measurement therefore does not depend on the shooting conditions. One can calculate as a preliminary the theoretical resolution by dividing by two the dimension of reference, here the diagonal.

In absolute terms, the measured resolution of the A7R III associated with the FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM is, at 28mm, equal to the theoretical resolution. The promise is therefore perfectly kept. On the other hand, decreasing quality is measured by increasing the focal length. At the maximum focal length, 70mm, the promise is only kept 80%. What remains however very good.

To assess the image quality, we chose a transcription of our measurements based on human perception and a concrete usage situation. The unit used in our tests is the number of cycles per degree. This unit is a way of expressing the resolution in relation to a given situation: here, an image drawn on a 20 x 30 cm, observed at 30 cm by our standard eye. Schematically, we can represent a cycle by a black + a white. The number of cycles per degree then corresponds to the number of black and white discernible in 1 degree.

Because of its definition, the A7R III promises us in this situation a resolution of 695 cycles per degree equivalent to a crop without visible loss of quality of at least 75% for an image drawn in 8 x 30 cm. Based on our measurements, you can crop up to 74% without any problem and therefore only keep about ¼ of the frame. It is only after that that a visible degradation of the image could be noticed. In terms of consistency, the A7RIII is excellent and the quality is constant at all points of the image, regardless of the focal length.

Sensitivity

If in terms of rendering details, it is very difficult for us to designate a winner, the A7R III is more consistent from focal length to focal point. In contrast, in JPEG, the colors are more saturated and the details accentuated. Thus certain colorful materials seem to lack details (cf. pink felt) and others appear artificial (cf. slate).

In summary, the performance of the tested couple is excellent, and here too we underline the relevance of the automatic settings of this Sony Alpha 7R III.

Optical quality

Overall, chromatic aberration is not invisible, but it is negligible. Indeed, at 70 mm and at the edge of the image, there is a maximum deviation of 0.8 mm for a 100% framing on a 20 x 30 cm. The geometric distortion tends to barrel, but it is globally imperceptible. The system tested does not exhibit any astigmatism, an optical defect which has the effect, let us remember, of distorting the image, leading for example to the confusion of close letters such as H and M or Q and O.

Video

Sony offers video recording in 4K at 30 frames per second and over the entire surface of the sensor with its A7R III. It allows Full HD 120p capture without cropping, and also offers several profiles, including S-Log3 and HLG. However, the product does not go so far as to titillate the big names in the discipline, like the GH5, which allows shooting in 4: 2: 2 10 bits.

Conclusion

For this third version, Sony gives us a very nice evolution of its A7R hybrid which corrects certain weak points of the previous model, starting with the autonomy which has become more than satisfactory. The device is also much more responsive, with a burst that has doubled in speed. The image quality does not change too much, it remains excellent nonetheless. Our only real criticism will concern the ergonomics of the device, which can really be improved, and its frankly anecdotal touch screen.

Finally, we will also appreciate its lower price than that of its competitor from Nikon, the D850 (€ 3,800 naked), with which it is generally equal on image quality. The A7R III is however more responsive but it loses points on ergonomics. Difficult to decide between them therefore, it will depend mainly on your personal preference, especially between hybrids and traditional SLRs. Anyway, no doubt about it: the Sony A7R III is a very high quality device, you will not be able to be disappointed.
