The Roborock S6 incorporates the qualities that made the success of its predecessor the Roborock S50: efficiency, versatility, intelligence and a very attractive price / quality ratio. The manufacturer also announces that it has improved certain small defects and shortcomings, which we hastened to verify.
Roborock is an independent Chinese manufacturer, although very strongly supported by Xiaomi and fully integrated into its connected ecosystem. He shook up the robot vacuum market in 2018 with a Roborock S50 as efficient and intelligent as products over $800 and for only $549. It was not flawless either and with the Roborock S6, the manufacturer sets out to correct its copy to achieve excellence.

Presentation
After releasing, in 2018, a Roborock S50 constituting an excellent quality / price ratio, the manufacturer declines a new version of its star robot vacuum cleaner and unveils the Roborock S6. This version, launched at $549 , does not mark a fundamental break with the previous generations of the device, but rather corrects the few small flaws of its elders while seeing its number of features increase from the Mi Home application. Note that Roborock is an independent company, incubated by Xiaomi.
Convenience of employment
The Roborock S6 recovers the rounded shape common to all iRobot vacuum cleaners and embeds a laser rangefinder on its Neato-style cover. Unfortunately, this model is as tall as its predecessor. And its 9.65cm height may prevent it from cleaning under some low furniture.
Entirely coated with shiny plastic, the Roborock S6 still carries the famous three keys on its hood – which have also undergone a little lifting. The one on the left always launches the “Spot” mode (targeted cleaning), the one in the middle triggers the suction or pauses it, and the one on the right orders the robot to return to its base.
At the right time, this new version still has a “mop” function. By installing a mini mop (two are supplied with the robot) and filling the small tank with water, the Roborock S6 can moisten the soil. It suffices to start a cleaning as one does by starting a vacuum cycle. The water is projected onto the mop by capillary action. So floors are not submerged in an overflow of water, they are simply moistened to dislodge the most stubborn dust. Be careful, however, there is no question here of replacing the weekly passage of the mop, but of removing the tough small dust embedded in the ground. This “bonus” function is rather well thought out in addition to being effective.
Unlike the iLife V8s robot, this robot vacuum cleaner does not come with a remote control, and it must necessarily be connected to the home’s Wi-Fi network and go through the application to access all the options.
Connectivity and application
The configuration of the device is necessarily done through the Mi Home application from Xiaomi (translated into French). After having selected the device, all you have to do is let yourself be guided by the application, which guides the user step by step in his configuration process.
The Mi Home application is very rich in options. Among the most widespread features, we logically find the weekly programming of cleaning cycles, the remote launch of the device, targeted cleaning or on a particular area. At each cleaning cycle, the application provides a fairly accurate map of the environment in which the robot has traveled. Virtual mapping is done in real time, throughout the cleaning cycle. At the end of each pass, the user can access the cleaning summary which lists the duration of the cycle, the surface cleaned and the remaining autonomy. The history allows in particular to see the places privileged or abandoned by the robot.
It is also possible to create cleaning zones. To do this, it suffices to draw rectangles within a map so that the robot will directly suck the targeted area. In use, this function has proven to be extremely effective and practical. The little extra that doesn’t spoil anything: you can multiply the areas to be cleaned during the same cleaning cycle. The robot will thus be able to vacuum the floor of the bedroom and that of the kitchen before returning to its base.
The creation of zones is also used to limit its intervention to certain rooms. The Roborock S6 is therefore able to create virtual beacons from the application. At most, the user can determine 10 intervention zones, or on the contrary prohibited, on a map by drawing rectangles, the size and orientation of which are defined. Note however that, on the Neato application, the number of virtual beacons that can be installed is 30.
In the robot’s parameters, we find 4 cleaning powers: silent, balanced, turbo and max. On the previous generation of Roborock, these different power levels had no effect on the suction performance, just the noise level. The shot has been corrected as we will see later. On the other hand, the “Carpet” mode – supposed to automatically adapt the suction power when the robot passes over a carpet – still does not seem very efficient to us.
Finally, one of the last particularly appreciable features (and also borrowed from iRobot): the one that reports on the state of the various elements of the robot vacuum cleaner. From the “maintenance” tab, the user can consult the level of wear of the filter, the main brush and the side brushes, as well as the sensors.
Washing
The dust collector is as small as ever (0.4 l) and remains accessible by simply lifting the cover. It takes this shape, reminiscent of a small cassette which is closed by an anti-allergen filter. Small flat – shared by many robot vacuum cleaners present in our comparison – the collector is not hermetically closed and here has an opening particularly conducive to the fall of waste on the ground. You must therefore be particularly careful not to spill it when handling it.
A single main brush alternating bristles and rubber blades officiates on this vacuum cleaner. It is supported by a side brush to clean the corners. If the brushes are easily removed – which makes them easier to clean – we much prefer the large rubber rollers on board iRobot’s new Roomba (Roomba e5 and Roomba i7 +, for example). By removing the nylon brushes from the rubber rollers, the accumulation of bristles and hair in the brushes is limited.
Like Neato vacuum cleaners, the Roborock S6 is equipped with a laser rangefinder that allows it to map its environment and find its way in space. In the dark or on dark floors, the robot is easily located and fulfills its function perfectly.
Like its predecessor, the Roborock S6 sails in a systematic zigzag fashion. He begins by cutting the room into zones, not without having gone around each room beforehand. This methodical navigation ensures perfect soil coverage; no place is spared. And the good news is that the robot never comes back to the same place.
Like many models before him, he is a little less comfortable in the corners even if the side brush does the maximum. Trapped between 16 legs of chairs, he always ends up getting by without too much difficulty.
When approaching electric cables, the Roborock S6 does like its predecessor, it prefers to avoid them. Slightly raised door steps are no problem for him and this also applies to thick rugs. If he likes to rub against the legs of chairs by easily overcoming them, he is necessarily less comfortable with furniture whose height is at the level of the laser rangefinder. And it can happen to get stuck below.
Suction
We carried out our suction tests on the “silent” and “max” levels in order to evaluate the performance of the robot on its minimum and maximum power. On hard ground, performance is ideal in both cases. Indeed, the Roborock S6 put 5 min 8 s set on “silent” and 5 min 5 s on “max” to clean the surface and recover all the waste.
The same goes for fine carpets. Whether set to “silent” or “max”, the robot has been shown to be able to collect all of the test material in 6 min 10 s (silent) and 5 min 45 s (max). These results are therefore irreproachable.
On thick, long-pile carpet, this is not ideal, but it is nevertheless significantly better than the results obtained with the Roborock S50. The S6 managed to harvest 66% in 7:35 when set to “silent” and surprisingly only 44% after 6:27, after which it gently returned to its base, feeling that it had done its job. cleaning. As always, we found most of the waste tucked away in the pile of the carpet. To date, no robot has managed to do as well as the Vorwerk Kobold V300, which was able to recover 94% of the material on this surface (in 8:27); never seen !
The “Carpet” mode, supposed to modulate the suction power of the robot when it passes over a carpet, has turned out to be quite useless insofar as it has in no way improved the suction performance.
Noise
The Roborock S6 makes the promise of a contained noise level, and the pact is respected. On this criterion, it does better than the 2nd generation Roborock (which had reached a sound level of 62 dB (A) in normal mode and 66 dB (A) in turbo mode since we noted 56 dB (A) on “silent” and 59 dB (A) on “max.” Thus, we are not far from the record obtained with the Samsung Navibot Corner Clean, whose sound level emits between 56 dB (A) and 58 dB (A).
Autonomy
The Roborock S6 is an indestructible robot, like its predecessor. Positioned on “silent”, it ran out of breath after 2 h 25 min of suction and after 1 h 40 min of cleaning on “max”. When its battery is low, it automatically returns to its base to recharge, then resumes cleaning until it has finished. In any case, the Roborock S6 can easily vacuum larger areas without having to recharge punctually. Allow 2 h 15 min for a full charge.
