Lose Weight: The Real Reason Losing Weight Is So Difficult

An industry worth billions has developed around the topic of weight loss, with countless diets, advice, training programs and nutrition tips. Therefore, one should actually think that there is neither a lack of knowledge nor of solutions to get this problem under control. And yet obesity has become a widespread disease in the western world. But what makes losing weight so difficult, especially if you are very overweight? Is intermittent fasting weight loss diet work?

This is why so many struggle with being overweight

Sedentary lifestyle and poor diet are known to be the main causes of obesity. Because these factors ensure that the daily energy balance leads to an excess of calories. This also increases the risk of obesity. At the same time, processes are set in motion unnoticed as the percentage of fat increases in the body. These make weight loss much more difficult and only seem to have something to do with a lack of willpower:

  • Overweight leads to a reduced feeling of satiety in the brain: German researchers found in a study that severely overweight people have an impaired energy supply in the brain on a biochemical level. While the brain is supplied with energy immediately after the sugar intake in people of normal weight, the energy intake in the brain hardly or not at all increased in severely overweight people. In other words, despite the calorie intake, the brain signals that it still needs food.
  • Impaired intestinal flora: while diets rich in fiber and nutrients accumulate those bacterial strains in the intestine that ensure optimal utilization of the food, diet rich in sugar and carbohydrates strengthens the intestinal bacteria that impair utilization. This leads to nutritional deficiencies and food cravings. In addition, the composition of the intestinal flora determines to a considerable extent how well the metabolism works and how much energy is burned or stored as fat reserves.
  • Impaired metabolism: The metabolism has a decisive influence on the body’s use of energy. People with a “good” metabolism have a high energy expenditure. People with a “bad” rating, on the other hand, have a low rating and are more likely to be overweight. The metabolism is influenced, among other things, by the following factors: the thyroid gland, hormonal balance (pregnancy, breastfeeding), medication, exercise behavior, diet and intestinal flora. But also whether you are overweight or normal weight. There is increasing evidence that being overweight has a strong influence on the metabolism, which makes losing weight even more difficult.

Your own behavior also plays an important role

But there are also hidden traps with regard to your own behavior that can make losing weight even more difficult:

  • You only take looks (social pressure) as a drive to lose weight and give up in frustration if the goal is not reached quickly enough or if crash diets trigger a yo-yo effect.
  • Lack of knowledge about what is healthy and how your own body works. Thus, unhealthy habits are not recognized or questioned and no solution is sought for them. There is also a lack of awareness that unhealthy habits must be permanently overcome in order to lose weight permanently.
  • Improper nutrition: Not only that high-energy food promotes overeating. In particular, foods with a high proportion of simple carbohydrates such as wheat flour or sugar cause the insulin level to fluctuate significantly, which leads to food cravings. Even low-nutrient foods lead to cravings, especially in the evening. So you can eat yourself hungry with the wrong diet – in the truest sense of the word. The wrong diet also makes you tired and tired, which makes it difficult to motivate yourself to be active.
  • It takes a lot more effort for overweight people to do sport, as sport is associated with much greater effort and subsequent exhaustion due to the higher body weight. This makes it much more difficult to stick to ambitious fitness programs over the long term.

All these effects create a real vicious circle: Overweight people have to struggle much more with feelings of hunger than people of normal weight. At the same time, they also suffer from a poor energy balance. The constant struggle with the yo-yo effect and ignorance cause additional frustration. Therefore, very overweight people have to muster considerably more willpower to lose weight permanently than people of normal weight. But how do you manage to break this vicious circle sustainably?
